About Pawleys Island
In 1889, the Original Pawleys Island Rope Hammock© was created at Pawleys Island, one of the oldest summer resorts on the South Carolina coast. When river boat pilot Captain Joshua John Ward found the grass-filled mattresses on his boat too hot in the summer, he decided to make a cool and comfortable cotton rope hammock to use on his boat. After several uncomfortable designs, Cap'n Josh made a hammock using wooden spreaders without knots. This original design has proven to be so comfortable, that it's still used in Pawleys Island's popular hammocks, over a century later.
Pawleys Island continues to use the highest quality materials when making their traditional all-cotton rope, spun polyester rope, and DuraCord® hammocks. Their custom-designed stretcher bars are cut from seasoned Carolina red oak, then steamed, bent, drilled, sanded, and varnished to impart a comfortable sway to the hammock and to spread the rope evenly for optimum stability.

this is a replacement for the pawleys island cotton hammock we had for 3 years that finally rotted out. i went for the duracord this time because it is supposed to last longer, but it is very stretchy and it is difficult to move around once in the hammock. the size is great for two people and the cotton one was stiff enough for us to use together, even with our small kids in there too, but this one turns cocoon-like and everyone ends up smushed together in the middle. if i did it over again, i would buy the cotton and just expect to replace it in a few years.

I previously bought a Nags Head Hammock from another source. The ad said "made in USA". When it arrived, it had a "made in China" label . I know this one is made in USA. It is comfortable and beautiful.

Comments about Pawleys Island Hammocks Original Pawleys Island Large Duracord Rope Hammock:
Beautiful, very comfortable, feels like real cotton only softer. My other patio furniture is dark brown metal with faux dark wicker or mesh, and I had painted my hammock stand to match. I opted for the dark brown color and it looks gorgeous!!!
I was replacing the mesh hammock I had because it was so uncomfortable no one ever used it. My hammock is poolside in South Florida so I needed something weather resistant. This should hold up nicely and it is soooo comfy! I did already have a pillow that I had made for the old hammock so that helped. You really need a pillow, especially if you plan to read in it.
It is pretty stretchy, but that's good. It cradles nicely, unlike the old mesh one. Just had to adjust the height a couple times. May need to go higher if someone heavier sits in it.
Enjoy!

I was happy to find a Pawley's Island hammock with longer-lasting rope than the original cotton rope. We hope to enjoy this for many years.

Q1: What is the spreader bar made out of?
A: Oak. Finished in Marine Varnish
Q2: I intend to mount the hammock to two 6x6 posts concreted in ground with an arbor above. What distance should the posts be spaced apart?
A: Minimum of 13 feet and no more than 16 feet. If this is a fixed position mount, you may need to adjust the chain length accordingly to account for the tautness needed for suspending the hammock and supporting you relaxing + the height needed to prevent the relaxer from hitting the ground. Factor the hammock being around 4 1/2 ft. off the ground - but again this is relative to the size of the person enjoying the hammock.
Q3: Are stands available for the Hammock?
A: We can recommend the item# HSHS10 if you want a metal stand. For a different look, we'd recommend a wood arc stand, item# KV034.
