The spread of the jungle hammock
Believed to have originated with the Native Americans, particularly in the West Indies, hammocks protected those who slept in them from snakes, insects, and other harmful or dangerous creatures. Christopher Columbus first introduced the hammock to Europeans when he returned to Spain after a voyage to the present day Bahamas, and by 1590 hammocks had been adopted for use by sailors sleeping on the gun decks of warships. The smartly designed jungle hammocks kept their occupants from being thrown overboard in rough seas. In fact, hammocks were used on naval ships well into the 20th century, and are often seen on leisure boats and cruise lines today.
A better night's rest with a Hennessy hammock
While the traditional hammock is great for sailors, Hennessy hammocks, or jungle hammocks, which originated in Venezuela, have been adopted for use by those sleeping in more tropical regions. Originally designed for the tropical environment, Hennessy hammocks were necessary to prevent the onset of fungal infections as well as bug bites that often spread diseases throughout villages. A rainfly would often be added to protect the occupant of the jungle hammock from becoming drenched in heavy rains.
Over the years, jungle hammocks have become popular amongst campers and backpackers because of their ability to protect people from bug bites and rain. Most modern day jungle hammocks come with mosquito netting and rainflies. Hennessy hammocks also have suspension lines that can be sprayed with insect repellant to give their occupants extra protection from bugs and other crawling creatures.
Pack it up with Hennessy hammocks
Hennessey hammocks are extremely lightweight, making them an ideal choice for camping and backpacking trips. Instead of having to haul around a heavy, bulky tent, a jungle hammock is easily stowed in a backpack. It also makes finding a place to sleep simple since it doesn't matter if the ground is uneven or even a bit muddy. All the jungle hammock needs are two trees. If no trees are present, a Hennessy hammock can also double as a tent. Hennessy hammocks have the added benefit of an asymmetrical design that is comfortable for people with back or knee problems. Finally, Hennessey hammocks have little to no impact in an area where it has been used, including on the tree. Hammock tree huggers are included with most jungle hammocks to ensure that no bark is rubbed off the tree.
Jungle hammocks have been used in many cultures for hundreds of years, and their continued use is not only practical, but also safe for the environment and comfortable for their users.
