Get That Weightless Feeling In 1973, an 18-year-old student at the University of Minnesota Experimental College invented the sky chair as a homework assignment. The sky chair went on to win an international furniture design award, and the creator decided to take his invention on the road. For years, he and his family sold sky chairs at Renaissance Fairs around the United States. Today, they continue to sell their sky chairs at fairs and trade shows, as well as from their workshops in Colorado, Minnesota, the Pacific Northwest, and the Bay Area. Sky chairs became and remained incredibly popular, and once you sit in one, you'll see why. Sky chairs, also known as air chairs, are basically fabric hammocks shaped like chairs. Both the chair seat and the attached foot rest are made either of canvas or of a more weather-resistant fabric (for outdoor use). They can be mounted on a ceiling support beam, a strong tree branch, or a freestanding sky chair stand. The beauty of the sky chair is that it gives you the comfort of a hammock in much less space, so a sky chair can be perfect for a patio, 3-season porch, tree house, boat, or even in your living room. | ![]() |
The ergonomic comfort of a sky chair is hard to beat. They're generally adjustable in multiple dimensions, so you can create the perfect angle to align your spine, legs, and feet. The only thing they lack is cup holders, but you can easily remedy that with a side table for your drink.
